Conservatory Furniture

The definition for conservatory is one, a large highly detailed greenhouse where plants are cultivated. The second definition of the word is, a smaller glass enclosure attached to a house called a conservatory. In general, a conservatory is a sunroom with a lot of plants, so yes; it’s just a fancier word for a sunroom. Just like with sunrooms, conservatories can be in an indoor or in an outdoor garden type setting. Depending on which you are doing you must keep in mind on which type of furniture to purchase for your conservatory furniture.

If you are planning a conservatory in an outdoor setting, the conservatory furniture that you are going to want to purchase is going to have to be durable to withstand the elements. Your choices would include, wicker which is very durable. As durable as it is, wicker will not stand up to constant outdoor weather abuse. Purchasing wicker with removable cushions will allow you to leave the furniture out in the rain during warm weather months without destroying the cushions but if not brought in for cover during season changes and if left out in snow and ice will degrade the furniture and make it weak and it will break.

Cane furniture is another type of outdoor conservatory furniture. This type of furniture is a close relative to the wicker family but made of cane. There are a lot of retailers that boast the maintenance free life of this type of furniture. It is important to remember that the maintenance free they are talking about is under the best and mildest of weather conditions. This furniture just as with its wicker sibling WILL deteriorate if left out under extreme weather conditions, make no doubt about it. If you would like to test some of the five-year maintenance free warranties and you live in Boston or Chicago were extreme weather changes are normal, be our guest!

If weather is a concern to you and you have an outdoor conservatory, another DURABLE choice for conservatory furniture would then be ornamental steel furniture. Although steel does degrade some with the elements, it is nowhere near as fragile as wicker, or cane would be. Again, if purchased with removable cushions this type of furniture can be left out to weather just about any type of elements including wind, rain, snow, and ice. We are not saying that ornamental steel is not indestructible. There is an amount of maintenance that must be done to it in order to keep it in good shape. Weather like rain, snow, and ice will make the steel start to rust. When this happens, it must be either sanded or ground down and repainted with a rust preventing paint to keep it looking nice. Otherwise, even though it will take significantly more time than wicker, it will corrode and break over time if not maintained properly.

There you have it, some sensible choices for outdoor conservatory furniture; the choice is now up to you to decide which way to go!
